LOG LINE
An insight into the adventures of a gormless duo’s attempt at hitch hiking nearly 2000 miles.
OUTLINE
The true story of James and Sophie’s journey across Europe with two backpacks, one brain and not a clue between them. Showing clips from unordered key moments in their trip, this documentary will look at friendship and boredom when on the road.
TREATMENT
Made entirely from sugar paper, the puppets will be slightly 3D although still shot on a flat surface.
The scenes and characters will be based on true events and real places. Lots of reference footage will be used.
The story will be light-hearted and so I want the colour scheme to reflect this - i.e. bold shape and vivid colour. The characters will be very detailed in-colour puppets. The background will be also very detailed and will give depth to the scene.
This will be shot using stop-frame techniques with little to no post-production in After Effects.
FUNCTION
The function of this film is to capture some real human moments and give an insight into what hitch hiking is really like.
SYNOPSIS
Sophie and James have been waiting on the side of an Austrian roadside for about an hour. A car pulls over and opens a door letting out a smoke which surrounds Sophie as she peers through trying to see who has been kind enough to stop. As the smoke drifts off to pollute some cleaner air, a large Slovenian man, Franz, wearing aviator sunglasses and an open shirt, puffing on a heavily chewed cigar, is revealed and waves for her to get in the car.
Glancing at James for agreement she checks that they are going to the right place. This is when she realises the man speaks no English. Bravely she attempt her GCSE Geran from ten years previous with her embarrassing English accent. Not really sure if any party understood what was happening they both bundled into the small blue Suzuki Alto.
Then car bumps along the road, Franz chews steadily on his cigar and Sophie looks out the window. The silence is heavy. Franz turns on the radio and a crackly version of ‘I’m Every Woman’ fills the car. This, if nothing else, highlights the lack of conversation more and Sophie looks around evidently thinking of something to say. She leans sideways towards Franz, he looks at her with curiosity and confusion on his face. When Sophie says’ Ich habe vier meerschweinchen’ [I have four guinea pigs] and leans back, a happy expression on her face at being able to remember a German sentance, Franz is left to be confused and turns back to driving.
A lorry zooms past, as the dust floats down to the floor Sophie and James, looking fairly fresh but a tad tired and frustrated, can be seen with their thumbs out holding their hitching signs on the side of a busy road. Cars are constantly passing them without slowing down and the frustration starts to show. Their smiles stretch across their faces but does not quite reach their eyes. With losing this bizarre expression James complains to Sophie who nods in reply.
Along the road another hitch hiker appears and starts to stand next to them. Sophie and James in their matching bright green t-shirts look at the trench coat wearing menacing stranger and edge father down the road thinking that this man would not help them get picked up. The man follows not realising what’s going on.
A car pulls up and opens its door to the gothic character. Confused Sophie and James look at the man properly and see that he is holding a sign that says ‘London’. From there they look up at the large green roadsign which confirms their fears. They are hitching on the wrong side of the city.
From there a montage sequence of different cars in different backgrounds is put together showing the wide variety of terrain and characters that Sophie and James encountered on their journey. This sequence ends with Robert. Robert is a tall, fatherly character who always wears a bumbag (suspected that he doesnt even take it off when he goes to bed) and in this bumbag contains his life. Anything he needs will be hidden in the folds of his Mary- poppins-esque bag. Robert just happens to be driving all the way to Croatia and invites Sophie and James to stay with him on the island of Krk.
